The Key to Rejuvenation at Midlife is Building Muscle
We are living in exciting times. Science is using new tools such as DNA sequencing to identify what happens in the human body when it exercises, A new study shows that during intense exercise, genes in the DNA are activated that promote health and longevity. The results are only going to come in stronger over time. I think we will find that exercise may slow down and possibly reverse certain aging processes.
Research continues to confirm that the key to midlife rejuvenation is building muscles Not just exercising those muscles aerobically. Weight lifting, baby. No way around it.
Where are the images of fit older women in the media?
Have you noticed there are virtually no images of fit older women online or in the media? As a woman in her sixties, I don’t have very many role models for being physically fit and defined at a fairly advanced age. I don’t know what level of fitness I can attain because I haven’t seen any pictures or know anyone personally who has attained a high level of fitness at this age. My intention is that in future posts I will feature interviews and photographs with fit midlife women working out as role models. Right now if you Google “fit women” all you see is 20-year-olds in skimpy workout wear. it’s time for a more representative sample of fitness in women of all age ranges. I am going to do my part to give fit midlife women more visibility.
So I train hard just to see what is possible. I figure that any muscle I make doesn’t know it’s being born into a nearly 70-year-old body so it’s as good a muscle as a twenty-year-old. Or at least that’s what I tell myself.
It’s also really fun defying expectations of what an older person should look like. I feel like I am part of the new wave of fit midlifers who are helping redefine the trajectory of healthy aging.
In future posts, I will feature interviews with other women who have become fit and how they did it. I’ll be interviewing trainers and weight loss coaches on the best exercises for midlife women, and more. I’d love to hear from those of you who have gotten fit or know a friend who has so we can tell your/her story.
What’s the Best Part?
